Project Description

Description

Project description

A3-NET project addressed the issue about relatively poor accessibility and air connections among Adriatic regions. Specific aims were to improve airports facilities, increase air traffic, improve accessibility of involved regions, analyze current air services and airports in the project area, modernize the infrastructure of airports, and create networks between airports and countries in the field of tourism, sport aviation, search and rescue. Four small airports – Bovec, Nikšić, Livino and Lisicji Jarak – and the heliport on the island of Rab were included in the project.

What has been done during the project in order to achieve its main goal(s)?

Activities to achieve main results and outputs of the project can be divided into two areas: strengthening airport facilities and networking of airports. To improve infrastructure at the airports and the heliport various technical documents, plans and different feasibility studies were prepared. Activities also included cooperation and networking among partners in the fields of sports aviation, tourism as well as protection and rescue. Apart from building infrastructure, partners have conducted various expert meetings, study visits, training programs and public events. Experts from all partner countries took part in expert meetings. In total, 10 events with around 500 participants took place. Project website was launched and 4887 pieces of various promotional materials for events and the project were created to support the dissemination of the project.

Which are the project main results/impacts?

Result/Impact 1: MODERNIZATION OF AIRPORT INFRASTRUCTURE AT PARTNER AIRPORTS

Bovec Municipality’s main investment was a new hangar with an administrative building, airport apron, paved external traffic surfaces with parking spaces and lawn along the access road. For the town of Rab, architectural documentation for the airport construction was made and the heliport was modernized for night flights. Nikšić Municipality gained two taxiways and two platforms. The ministry of Economic Affairs gained technical documentation for infrastructural work (a new hangar and an access road).

Result/Impact 2: AIRPORT NETWORKING AND KNOWLEDGE IMPROVEMENT

Airports networked and improved their knowledge by taking part in several workshops, expert meetings, study visits and training programs. The town of Rab organized a workshop about forest firefighting and search and rescue (the latter was also organized in Bovec). Another workshop on security in the modern parachuting was organized by the Municipality of Niksic. The Municipality of Livno hosted a roundtable about best practices in airport management and financing. Overall, this helped improve partners’ knowledge and operating activities.

Result/Impact 3: IMPROVED ACCESSIBILITY AND TOURIST OFFER

By improving air connection in certain areas in the Alps, the Adriatic and the Dinari Mountains, these areas are now easily and safely accessible. Heliport modernization on the Rab island improved access to the island in bad weather conditions. Improved infrastructure at the airports of Bovec, Nikšić, and Livno has significantly contributed to an increased number of tourists visiting these destinations.

Result/Impact 4: EXTENDED DATA ON CURRENT AIR SERVICES AND PLANS

Six business plans or feasibility studies were made for different airports. The methodology allowed for an evaluation of the effects that the development of small airports has on the region as a whole. All this helped produce extensive data and knowledge for improvement plans in the field of aviation in the area. Following the study results, several prepositions for a joint model of airport development were published.
