ZOONE aims to strengthen innovation capacity both at researchers/technicians and institutional level to create a favourable environment and specific support to zootechnical enterprises. Building a shared innovative scientific and institutional baseline is the requirement to develop innovative entrepreneurial frame. ZOONE aims to promote innovative joint research activities and scientific-institutional cooperation networks (reinforcing and widening the existing cbc network) to strengthen Adriatic rural areas economies and consolidate/develop shared institutional framework and policies for MS/CC/PCC modernization, ensuring environmental, economic and social sustainability for a knowledge and innovation based zootechny.
What has been done during the Project lifespan in order to achieve its main goal/s?
On the basis of a three folder approach including pilot actions, training and capacity building actions and thanks to the effective and efficient management and the beneficiaries coordination, the ZOONE project allowed the definition of state of play and development scenario of the livestock sector in Western Balkans.
The project foresaw the establishment of 2 pilot barns of Marchigiana cattle breeds in Udine and Macerata for research and experimental purposes. Innovative protocols for superovulation reducing the stress and ameliorating the animal welfare conditions and photogrammetric system were created and tested.
The project training value and the research results were achieved by frontal lessons and training modules submission, workshops, master, mobility weeks in the Udine and Ancona Universities for researchers/PhD students. The scientific value of the project was outlined by scientific publications and Degree Thesis based on experimental activities carried out and innovative protocols tested thanks to ZOONE by the Universities of Udine and Ancona. The project co-financed the construction works, still ongoing, of a pilot barn for experimental goals in Pazin. At Italian pilot areas level, according to breeding systems and geographical features, trails were implemented to test new crops varieties, cattle weight gain related to new rations introduction were measured.
The project results were disseminated by means of cross-border communication tools such as press-articles, broadcasting events, brochure, websites and targeted workshops/events. The goal of the Marchigiana breed strengthening/transfer towards Western Balkans was fully met and overtaken with additional added value of expected calves after the end of the project. A final conference in Belgrade and a project closure event in Ancona were arranged to present and discuss project results. The project duration extension played a crucial role for the achievement of technical results that were strongly related to biological cycle.
At institutional level, ZOONE contributed to policies harmonization of Candidate and Potential Candidates States by carrying out capacity building actions such as thematic workshops, a mobility week for agriculture officials, field traceability and quality, animal welfare protocols, administrative services towards breeders, land use and pasture resources management.
